Pradaxa is a blood-thinning (anticoagulant) prescription medicine. It is used for preventing blood clots and stroke in people who have a particular type of irregular pulse known as atrial fibrillation. Pradaxa inhibits thrombin activity. Thrombin is a naturally orccuring protein in the human body, and is responsible for clot formation. Pradaxa, as an effective thrombin inhibitor, lowers the chances of blood clots. Clinical studies have proved that Pradaxa is more effective as an anticoagulant compared to warfarin.

Atrial fibrillation is a type of abnormal heart rhythm which can lead to many complications including heart failure and stroke. The risk of stroke increases in patients with atrial fibrillation because the blood can pool and form clots in the atria. Using a blood thinner such as Pradaxa can help to avoid such blood clots occurring, thus reducing the risk of stroke. Atrial fibrillation is usually noticed by symptoms similar to an increase in heart rate. Patients with a rapid or irregular heart rate may misinterpret the symptoms as palpitations and difficulty with exercise. Changes in the heart rate can occasionally produce angina, which is pain in the chest due to irregularities with the heart.
